One of the core rules of living a healthy lifestyle says: “Thou shalt not eat unhealthy food”. But how can a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu athlete stay away from sweets and other junk foods?
The best way to make sure you don’t get into temptation to eat any unhealthy food is to actually not have any at home. If you open a fridge or a cupboard and find, side by side, an apple and some candy, don’t try and tell me you’ll go for the apple.
It’s very easy, get rid of cookies and other sweets and stock up on fruits, low-fat mozzarella sticks, nuts and other healthy snacks.
When you’re hungry, your organism will naturally demand that you fuel it with food. Unfortunately, your hand will often go for that candy bar, instead of a bowl of oatmeal or some other healthy food.
The less your food craving is in general, the less will you crave unhealthy food, so make sure to eat something healthy every 4-5 hours.
Don’t let yourself and your body to suffer from lack of water. In fact, this might make your organism think it is actually hungry, so make sure you always have a bottle of water in the fridge, sports drinks (sugar-free, of course), vegetable juices (freshly squeezed if possible) and herbal teas.
Here’s how the human body works in general: the more sugar you consume, the more it will crave. Sugar affects blood glucose and causes both ups and downs.
Sweets are the obvious problem here, but you should also keep an eye on fruit juices (even those that say “no sugar added” on the label), certain cereals and, of course, soda drinks.
